Namariel
Legends: Iron Lord is a steampunk fantasy game for young children which was
published by Ubisoft in 1989. The game follows a young girl called Amelie who
lived with her uncle, Davencino, on a remote hill in the kingdom of Namariel
which was ruled by the usurper – the Iron Lord – presently. The story is about
her adventures through Namariel as she plots to overthrow the Iron Lord.
As I mentioned
in my Top 5 Point-and-Click Mystery Games you should play right now, this game
might be my favorite Steampunk Fantasy beginner’s game at the moment,
especially because of its gameplay format. What I most like about this game is
that there is no separate Hidden Objects Scene. The main Scenes are Hidden
Objects scenario themselves so you do not have waste time looking for useless
items while there is monster waiting to kill you on the main screen.
Personally, I
don’t like separate Hidden Objects Scene since most of the times, you have to
look for items you will not use. But in this case, all the items you find are
important for the game to progress; in one word – useful. For this very reason,
Namariel Legends: Iron Lord gets quite a good score from me. Aside from the
gameplay, I also like the graphics, the music and I love the fact that they
managed to include a bunch of cut-scenes throughout the game which are not
useless as well. It almost gives the game a cinematic feel. I highly recommend
this game for children under 13 but I am pretty sure adults like me will also
enjoy this well-crafted game just as equally.
Now that we are
done with the short review, let’s take a look at the gameplay and the detailed
full story of the game.
Gameplay
- From the main menu, you can create a unique and individual profile and your progress will be saved for that particular profile only.
- There are two mods to this game: Regular and Expert.
- In Regular mode, the player is free to roam the locations without a time limit; the interactive parts are highlighted and the Hint Bar fills up quicker. The Expert mode limits these features.
- The Hidden Objects Scenes are incorporated in the main storyline.
- On the game screen, the player will find the following things – the menu button, the hint button, the diary button and a mind-reading microscope button, which can be used to read the minds of animals and robots. Later on in the game, the robot Jim will also be added to the main screen. The player also has an inventory bar.
- The player can access the Hint button as many times as he likes in Regular mode, but not before the button refills in between each click.
- The game offers a custom cursor.
- The game offers non-interactive special cut-scenes important to the storyline.
Plot
Davencino’s Lab
According to the
famous prophet, Nostramus, the prosperous kingdom of Namariel – ruled by King
George and Queen Elsa – would fall into ruins in the near future. But no one
took him seriously because everyone at peace. Then one day, when Princess Emily
was still a newborn, the palace was attacked by the notorious Iron Lord. The
king and the queen were allegedly murdered right on the spot and the princess
went missing, supposedly under the care of a mysterious person who took her
away in his flying boat.
Eighteen years
later, we follow the girl called Emily who was orphaned from a young age and
has been living with her Uncle Davencino ever since. Davencino, who has one
functioning mechanical leg, is a prodigy in the field of mechanics and been a
part of the Royal Academy for a long time. The duo lived in a secluded hill inside
a broken down balloon-ship with their pet Aira.
One day, a small
robot called Little Jim, familiar to Davencino, comes to their house with a
video message from the king himself. The king, who is alive, asks Davencino to
tell Emily to go to the prophet Nostramus to ask about the prophecy. But before
they can finish watching the whole video, they are attacked by a mechanical
robot. Davencino gets captured and Emily is faints.
The Prison Plane
When Emily wakes
up, she finds herself locked up in a cell. She also finds Jim locked up with
her. As she peeks out of her cell, she sees that Davencino is locked up in the
cell across hers and a man in a uniform is threatening him to work for them or
they will kill Emily. After that he leaves.
Emily manages to
break free from her cell with some help from Jim. She goes to her uncle who
tells her to leave him and instead, find the prophet Nostramus as only he can
help with their current situation. As Emily explores through the area, she realizes
that they were in some kind of Airship. She and Jim manage to go to the
captain’s (the man in the uniform) cabin after neutralizing a couple of the
hostile robots.
Upon entering
the cabin, Emily sees that the captain is having a conversation with the Iron
Lord. According to the Iron Lord, Emily is the prophesized Chosen One and the
captain must kill her and leave the ship with Davencino immediately. Hearing
this, the captain leaves the control room. But as he goes outside, he finds the
neutralized robots and sets the alarm, blocking the way Emily came through to
the control room.
Emily finds
another way back to the cell-area and sees that the captain is leaving the ship
with Davencino, locking her in so that she dies in the airship crash. With help
from Jim, Emily manages to board an ornithocopter – a special helicopter that
moves by flapping its wings – and flees the airship. However, the Iron Lord’s
spy, a special centipede-like robot, sabotages their copter and they crash land
into a forest.
The Ancient
Forest
When Emily wakes
up, she sees that a giant robot called a Sawboter (whose job is to chop down
trees) run towards her but is immediately neutralized by a very old man with
long white hair. He beckons Emily to follow him. After reaching to the man’s cabin,
he introduces himself as the great prophet, Nostramus. He tells Emily to save
the Ancient Tree to protect the forest from machines like the Sawboter. As he
is getting older, he can concentrate on one job at a time and he shall hold the
robot down until Emily cures the tree.
As per Nostramus’s
order, Emily travels to the heart of the forest where the Ancient Tree is. On
her way, she meets various magical creatures like the Forest Giant and the
Keeper of the Forest. From the Fairies of the tree, she learns that the core of
the tree was attacked by the Centipede robot. Emily cures the tree as per the
Fairies’ instructions and they give her a plant shoot which can help destroy
the Sawboter once and for all.
After Emily
plants the shoot near the Sawboter’s feet, larges vines spring up from the
ground and cover the robot. From inside the Sawboter, a young boy called Tom
comes out. He informs Emily and Nostramus that he works for the Iron Lord in
order to feed his family. Without the robot, he will lose his job. Nostramus
convinces him to join them against the Iron Lord to help save Namariel. Upon hearing
that the man was no other than the great prophet himself, Tom agrees. Back in
his cabin, Nostramus also tells Emily the whole prophecy and informs her that
she is the Chosen One, the true heir to the throne.
With Tom’s help,
Emily fixes the broken down airship stuck in the Ancient Tree. Together they
fly to the Iron Lord’s fortress where he uses many men to work day and night
making robots for him. But the Centipede robot sabotages their airplane again
and they crash outside the fortress. After they recover, Tom helps Emily to get
back into the fortress by fixing the elevator which leads into the fortress. But
it can room only one person, so Emily has to go alone. Tom promises her that he’ll
find another way to get inside.
Iron Lord’s
Fortress
As Emily
searches for a way to sneak in, she looks through a porthole and finds her
uncle locked up in one of the cells. She sees that the Iron Lord himself
approaches him and threatens to work for him. He wants Davencino to create
something that will enslave the whole world. After that he leaves. Emily talks
with Davencino and the scientist informs her that the Iron Lord is none other
than his apprentice Urfin.
Long ago,
Davncino came across some crystal jewels which he incorporated into his works
to create mechanical robots. Urfin became his apprentice. But he stole all of
Davencino’s works and about one year later, he came back as the Iron Lord. In
order to defeat him, Emily must destroy the main power source of the fortress
which controls most of the machines of the castle.
Emily sneaks
into the Iron Lord’s bedroom and finds the cell in which Davencino was locked
in. She free him and together they go the main laboratory of the Iron Lord.
Davencino powers up the main circuitry to destroy it. But as the engine is
charging up, the Iron Lord attacks them. Davencino manages to fully power up
the engine and the main circuitry gets destroyed with an explosion. The Iron
Lord is thrown out of the castle in the explosion and he falls to his death.
The mechanical
Centipede suddenly comes out of nowhere and charges at Emily but is squashed by
a pair of heavy boots. She looks up and sees that it is none other than Tom. In
the final cut, the three of them –
Davencino, Tom
and Emily – are seen to be looking out hoping for a new future for Namariel.
